Luis Galeano, exiled Nicaraguan journalist, detained by ICE in Florida
Luis Galeano, an exiled Nicaraguan journalist and director of the program Café con Voz, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Florida on Monday, September 14, 2026. Galeano was working as an Uber driver at the time of his arrest.
Galeano, 48, fled Nicaragua in 2018 due to political persecution and subsequently applied for political asylum in the United States. In February 2023, the Nicaraguan government under Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo stripped him of his nationality and declared him a fugitive.
The detention has drawn significant concern from human rights organizations, journalists, and political figures. U.S. Representative María Elvira Salazar has urged authorities to prevent his deportation, stating that returning him to Nicaragua would place his life in extreme danger due to the regime's previous actions against him.
