Luis Paz-Ares named Physician of the Year at ABC Salud Awards

Dr. Luis Paz-Ares has been named Physician of the Year at the ABC Salud Awards, recognizing a career that integrates clinical practice, teaching, and research. Paz-Ares serves as the head of the Clinical Lung Cancer Research Unit H12O-CNIO and is the head of Medical Oncology at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre.

A leading figure in international oncology, he is specifically recognized for his scientific contributions to treating small cell lung cancer. He has led several international clinical trials, most notably the phase 3 IMforte study. The results of this decade-long research, published in The Lancet, demonstrated that a combination of durvalumab and atezolizumab as maintenance treatment significantly improves survival rates for patients with advanced small cell lung cancer. This finding led to approvals by the FDA and EMA.

In addition to his clinical roles, Paz-Ares is a professor of medicine at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
