Luis Planas becomes Spain's longest-serving Agriculture Minister

Luis Planas has become the longest-serving Minister of Agriculture in Spanish democracy. Having been appointed to the role on June 6, 2018, he has surpassed the previous record of 3,023 days held by Carlos Romero, who served from 1982 to 1991.

During his tenure, Planas has managed several significant challenges, including large-scale agricultural protests in 2020 and 2024, as well as food price crises resulting from the war in Ukraine and conflicts in Iran. He also briefly served as the interim Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function in 2019.

Planas has highlighted legislative achievements such as the food chain law, the Common Agricultural Policy (PAC) strategic plan, and the National Food Strategy. He is also noted as a potential candidate to lead the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2027.
