Luis Raúl Menocchio: The criminal known as ‘The Man of a Thousand Faces’
Luis Raúl Menocchio, known by the nicknames ‘El Gusano’ and ‘The Man of a Thousand Faces,’ is currently serving life sentences at the Federal Penitentiary Unit No. 6 in Rawson, Chubut. Born into a wealthy yerba mate-producing family in Misiones, Argentina, Menocchio transitioned from a high-society lifestyle to a criminal career involving drug distribution and murder.
He gained notoriety for his ability to evade capture by using false identities and undergoing aesthetic surgeries to alter his appearance. One of his most prominent crimes occurred in Paraguay in August 2004, involving the disappearance and murder of businessman Eduardo Fidel Maciel and his girlfriend, Graciela Méndez. Their bodies were later discovered inside cement-filled drums near Fernando de la Mora.
Menocchio was transferred to the Patagonian prison in 2014 following an attempted escape from a facility in Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña. He faces potential extradition to Paraguay to answer for the unsolved murders committed during his time there.
