Baltimore Orioles claim Luis Robert Jr. off waivers from Mets

The Baltimore Orioles have claimed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. off waivers from the New York Mets. By acquiring Robert before the September 1 roster deadline, the Orioles ensure he is eligible for the postseason should they qualify. Baltimore will assume the remaining portion of Robert’s $20 million salary for the season, as well as a $2 million buyout if they decline his $20 million club option for 2027.

Robert, a 29-year-old former All-Star, has struggled with injuries and consistency this season, batting .223 with 10 home runs in 58 games for the Mets. However, he showed a recent resurgence in August, posting an .841 OPS with six home runs. The Orioles aim to use his right-handed power to provide protection in the lineup for Pete Alonso and Gunnar Henderson, particularly as a platoon option against left-handed pitching.

In response to the roster move, the Mets have activated infielder Mark Vientos from the injured list and announced September call-ups, including outfielder Nick Morabito and pitcher Justin Hagenman. The move allows the Mets to save salary and provides Morabito an opportunity to compete for playing time in the outfield.
