Luis Tato wins Visa d'or News for Madagascar coverage
Spanish photojournalist Luis Tato has been awarded the Visa d'or News, the highest distinction at the Visa pour l'image festival in Perpignan. The award recognizes his coverage of the 2025 Generation Z uprising in Madagascar.
Tato, an AFP photographer, documented the protests in Madagascar that began in late September 2025. The demonstrations, driven by young adults protesting corruption and economic hardship, eventually led to the military overthrow of President Andry Rajoelina in mid-October.
During his acceptance, Tato paid tribute to the festival's late founder, Jean-François Leroy, noting that Leroy had provided him with his first major exhibition opportunity in 2018. Tato expressed deep respect for the Malagasy youth, stating they understood the importance of having their stories told.
