Luis Turiba, prominent Brazilian poet and journalist, dies at 76

Poet and journalist Luis Turiba has died in Salvador at the age of 76. Born in Pernambuco, Turiba established a significant career in Brazilian journalism and literature, becoming a prominent cultural figure in Brasília after moving there in the late 1970s.

Throughout his journalistic career, Turiba worked for major national outlets including O Globo, Manchete, Gazeta Mercantil, Jornal de Brasília, and Correio Braziliense. He was a two-time recipient of the Esso Journalism Award. His reporting covered major national events, such as the Transamazônica works and the Serra Pelada mining operations.

In addition to journalism, Turiba was an accomplished poet with numerous published works, including ‘Kiprokó’, ‘Clube do Ócio’, and ‘Cadê?’. He also served in the Ministry of Culture, notably working under Minister Gilberto Gil, where he contributed to the development of the ‘Pontos de Cultura’ initiative.
