Luisa González detained in Ecuador over alleged campaign money laundering

Ecuadorian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Luisa González has been placed in preventive detention at the Riobamba Women's Prison. Her arrest follows an investigation by the Attorney General's Office known as 'Caso Laberinto', which examines alleged money laundering and irregular financing during her 2023 presidential campaign.

The investigation focuses on potential illicit funds, including suspected inflows from Venezuela and proceeds from illegal hydrocarbon smuggling. While the prosecution has formulated charges against several individuals, including Santiago Díaz and Wendy Onofre, González's legal team has characterized the proceedings as a 'state hunt' and a form of selective political prosecution intended to neutralize her electoral influence.

González was apprehended in the Canuto parish of Manabí province and subsequently transferred to Chimborazo. Her detention has drawn international attention, with former Colombian presidents Gustavo Petro and Ernesto Samper calling for her release. Additionally, the Grupo de Puebla has demanded that Ecuadorian authorities ensure her fundamental rights and provide transparency regarding the legal basis for her imprisonment.
