Luisa María Alcalde Luján appointed to Legal Counsel of the Presidency

Luisa María Alcalde Luján has experienced a rapid political ascent in Mexico, moving from federal deputy to head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, then to the Ministry of the Interior, and eventually to the presidency of the MORENA party. Following her leadership of MORENA, she was appointed by President Claudia Sheinbaum to the Legal Counsel of the Presidency.

Her career has faced scrutiny regarding her political influence and her proximity to former President López Obrador. Discussions have also centered on potential conflicts of interest due to her family background; her mother, Bertha Luján, served as Comptroller of the Federal District, and her father, Arturo Alcalde, is a lawyer specializing in labor and union affairs. Critics previously raised questions regarding the separation of professional and family interests during her tenure as Secretary of Labor.

Additionally, her leadership of MORENA has been debated due to her path to the federal deputy position via a proportional representation list rather than direct election, as well as the costs associated with her campaign to increase party membership, which reportedly exceeded 27 million pesos.
