Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's political trajectory in Brazil is characterized by his transition from a union leader to a central figure in a nation previously shaped by military rule. After four unsuccessful attempts, Lula secured the presidency in the 2002 elections with 61.3% of the vote.

To stabilize his administration and address concerns from the business sector and financial markets, Lula integrated textile businessman and senator José Alencar from the Liberal Party into his first government (2003-2007).
