Luján Zoo big cats begin relocation to US and South African sanctuaries
The international animal welfare organization Four Paws has launched a major operation to relocate 30 lions and tigers from the former Luján Zoo in Argentina to wildlife sanctuaries in the United States and South Africa.
The Luján Zoo was closed in 2020 following reports of irregularities and poor animal welfare. Many of the animals remained at the facility in cramped concrete enclosures for years. The relocation involves transporting 15 big cats to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, USA, and the remaining 15 to the Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa.
Specialists have been using specialized training and, in some cases, safe sedation to move the animals into transport crates. The logistics of the mission involve complex international flights, with animals traveling through transit points such as Chile, Germany, or the Netherlands to reach their final destinations.
