Luka Modrić’s future uncertain after Croatia’s World Cup exit

Croatia were eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup in Toronto, losing 2‑1 to Portugal. Team captain Luka Modrić did not return with the squad to Zagreb after the match, opting instead to go on a family holiday.

Modrić’s contract with AC Milan expired on 30 June. Club officials, including coach Ruben Amorim and owner Gerry Cardinale, have spoken to the 41‑year‑old midfielder and are reportedly trying to secure an extension for the 2026‑27 season. Milan are also reinforcing the squad with defensive signings and promoting young talent as they plan for the coming campaign.

Media across Europe have highlighted Modrić’s contributions – over 2 000 minutes played for Milan and more than 200 caps for Croatia – while the player’s decision on his club and international future remains pending.
