Luka Modric's future at AC Milan hangs in the balance after the World Cup

Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, 40, is approaching the end of his one‑year contract with AC Milan, which expires on 30 June. The deal contains an automatic renewal option that only the player can activate, and he has repeatedly demanded sporting guarantees to stay.

Sources close to the club, including journalist Matteo Moretto and transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano, say Modric initially intended to extend his stay, but recent managerial and technical turmoil at Milan has led him to reassess. He has not yet made a final decision and plans to wait until the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup, where he is representing Croatia.

Three scenarios are being discussed: a contract renewal for another season, an immediate departure possibly to return to Real Madrid in a non‑playing role, or retirement from professional football. The outcome remains uncertain, with the player retaining full control over his future.
