Luka Modrić to retire after 2026 World Cup, eyes Real Madrid role

Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić, who left Real Madrid in summer 2025, signed a one‑year contract with AC Milan that runs to June 2026. As he approaches his 200th international cap, reports say he intends to quit playing after the 2026 World Cup, which will be partially hosted in the United States.

Real Madrid president Flor Florentino Pérez has been quoted as saying the club would welcome Modrić “with open arms” for a non‑playing position, with speculation ranging from ambassador to technical advisor, though no official offer has been confirmed.

Milan’s lack of Champions League qualification and Modrić’s age (40) have limited his motivation for a further season, and the Italian side has hinted at a possible part‑time or limited‑minutes arrangement if he chooses to stay.

Modrić has already announced his intention to retire from the Croatian national team after the World Cup, ending a career that includes six Champions League titles and four Ballon d’Or nominations.
