Luka Modric Set to Retire After 2026 World Cup, Likely Ends Club Career

Croatian midfield legend Luka Modrić, who will turn 41 in September 2026, is expected to announce his retirement from professional football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Reports indicate he plans to finish his playing days following the tournament, despite still being offered short‑term extensions.

His current contract with AC Milan expires in the coming days. Although Modrić received multiple offers, he has declined them and has not signalled a desire to stay at the Serie A club, which missed Champions League qualification this season. Spanish media suggest Real Madrid could propose a non‑playing role should he retire.

Modrić will represent Croatia at the World Cup staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where Croatia is placed in a difficult group with England, Panama and Ghana. His decision will mark the end of a career that included a Ballon d'Or win, a 2018 World Cup final appearance and a successful spell at Real Madrid.
