Luka, Spanish Rescue Dog, Dies After Surgery Post-Venezuela Earthquake Mission

Luka, a trained rescue dog from the canine unit of the Badajoz fire brigade in Spain, was deployed to Venezuela after the twin earthquakes of 24 June 2024 (magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5) that devastated La Guaira and surrounding areas. During the operation she helped locate six bodies among the rubble, guiding rescue teams to possible survivors.

The dog was honoured with a medal by the Diputación de Badajoz on 6 July for her service. On 4 July she underwent surgery on her spleen and liver, but the operation was unsuccessful and she died shortly thereafter. The Diputación and the fire brigade announced her death, describing her as a valued member of the rescue team and expressing deep sorrow at the loss.
