Romelu Lukaku Rejects Backup Role as Napoli Plot Future

Agent Federico Pastorello told Sky Sport that Romelu Lukaku will not accept a secondary role behind Rasmus Hojlund at Napoli, stating “Obviously no, he’s an extraordinary player and one of the world’s most prolific strikers.” Pastorello added that financial considerations are driving the club’s stance, as Napoli carries the salaries of two high‑cost forwards.

Lukaku, 33, is under a contract that runs to June 2027 with an annual gross wage of about €11 million. The club has reportedly set a minimum transfer price of around €15 million, and a possible biennial deal could spread the cost, but no salary reduction has been offered. Discussions about a sale have surfaced, with Juventus mentioned as a potential suitor, though no concrete offer exists.

The forward market remains “blocked,” according to Pastorello, making any move complex. Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna indicated that the club must resolve the striker’s status before pursuing other targets such as Rasmus Hojlund or Dusan Vlahović. Lukaku’s agent stresses the player will only stay where he is wanted and will not remain a backup.
