Luke Daniel Evans granted bail for alleged Wickham gym arson
Luke Daniel Evans has been granted bail and placed under home detention following allegations of three arson attacks in early 2024. Evans is accused of twice firebombing the Air Locker Training gym in Wickham and subsequently torching his mother's silver hatchback in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
During his court appearance, Evans claimed he acted under duress, alleging that his family was threatened. He has pleaded not guilty to three counts of damaging property by fire. Justice Tim Faulkner noted that while the case is strong and involves CCTV footage, Evans's mental health conditions and the significant time already served in custody were factors in the decision. He is scheduled for a hearing at Newcastle Local Court in November.
