Luke Evans rejects stereotype linking sexuality to political views

Actor Luke Evans has addressed the assumption that sexual orientation dictates political or cultural beliefs. In an interview with The Telegraph regarding his upcoming ITV drama, ‘The Party’, Evans stated that being gay does not automatically mean an individual must be ‘woke’. He emphasized that sexuality is only one aspect of a person and that opinions on society vary widely among individuals, noting he has both ‘woke’ and ‘unwoke’ gay friends.

Evans also discussed his acting career and the representation of sexuality on screen. He argued that if gay actors were restricted to playing only gay characters, he would not have had a career, as he has frequently played ‘straight macho roles’. While supporting increased opportunities for gay and trans actors to play authentic roles, he expressed that he finds it offensive when straight actors play gay characters by relying on clichés. However, he acknowledged that some of the most profound performances have come from straight actors portraying gay characters.
