Luke Humphries discusses mental health struggles and career recovery
Professional darts player Luke Humphries has shared his past struggles with mental health, revealing that he once considered retiring from the sport due to severe anxiety. During a 2019 PDC tournament, Humphries suffered a panic attack that led him to doubt his future as a professional.
Partnering with the charity Samaritans to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Humphries credited seeking medical help and speaking openly with his parents and doctors as the turning points that saved his career. He noted that the decision to be honest about his feelings allowed him to eventually achieve significant success, including winning the 2023/24 World Darts Championship and reaching the world number one ranking.
While Humphries continues to experience bouts of anxiety, he stated that he has learned how to manage them. He emphasized that being open is a crucial first step for those facing similar challenges.
