Luke Lindberg appointed head of World Food Program

The United Nations has announced the appointment of Luke Lindberg as the new Executive Director of the World Food Program (WFP). Lindberg, a U.S. agriculture official currently serving as the Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the USDA, was nominated by President Donald Trump.

Lindberg will succeed Cindy McCain, who stepped down following a mild stroke in October 2025. WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau will serve as Acting Executive Director until Lindberg officially assumes his role. The appointment was confirmed by the WFP Executive Board following a joint announcement by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu.

Lindberg takes leadership of the Rome-based agency at a critical time. The WFP reports that approximately 266 million people are facing acute hunger, though funding constraints mean the agency is currently aiming to assist only 110 million people this year.
