Luke Littler Defeats Niko Springer to Open World Matchplay Title Defense

World number one Luke Littler began his defence of the Betfred World Matchplay title with a 10‑6 first‑round victory over Germany's Niko Springer at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. The 19‑year‑old hit seven 180s and posted an average of 109.53, saying he had to "find another gear" after trailing early in the match.

Littler quipped to a fan that he would be the next England manager and looked forward to a round two clash with Nathan Aspinall. The tournament offers a £1 million prize fund, with £225,000 awarded to the champion.
