Lula 1989 debate video resurfaces amid Caiado campaign

A video from the 1989 presidential election debates has resurfaced on social media following a recent interview with Ronaldo Caiado on Jornal Nacional. The footage shows Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva refusing to ask Caiado a question during a televised debate on TV Bandeirantes, stating he would only do so “when he reaches 1.5%” in the polls.

In the 1989 election, which was the first direct presidential vote following Brazil's redemocratization, Caiado ultimately received 0.72% of the valid votes. The historical clip has gained renewed attention as Caiado is once again a candidate for the presidency, creating a parallel between the two political figures decades after their initial encounter.
