Brazil and Mexico strengthen energy and trade ties

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a videoconference to strengthen bilateral relations, focusing on trade, energy, and social policies. A central component of their discussion was the expanding cooperation between the state-owned oil companies Pemex and Petrobras.

Following a memorandum of understanding signed in June, the two companies are negotiating a second agreement to collaborate on refining and the sale of fuels. While the initial agreement focuses on hydrocarbon exploration and production in the Gulf of Mexico, the new negotiations aim to leverage Petrobras’s expertise in complex maritime operations and Pemex’s regional presence. The leaders emphasized the importance of economic integration between the two largest economies in Latin America amid shifting international trade dynamics.
