UN General Assembly: Leaders call for Security Council reform and health sovereignty

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly, several world leaders addressed critical issues of global governance and health. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emphasized national sovereignty, stating that Brazil will not be a ‘backyard’ for other nations. He also advocated for the reform of the UN Security Council to address historical imbalances and reduce the disproportionate power of permanent members.

In the realm of global health, Adriano Massuda, executive secretary of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, presented Brazil’s experience with the Unified Health System (SUS), specifically its pioneering role in providing universal and free HIV/AIDS treatment. He called for a shift in global health architecture to promote regional production of medicines and technology transfer, arguing that countries should be active participants in innovation rather than mere recipients.

Other leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and the King of Eswatini, also called for multilateralism and the revitalization of international law to prevent a return to a ‘law of the jungle.’ Meanwhile, domestic political tensions in Brazil were highlighted by Lula’s warnings regarding the need for a governing majority in the Senate to avoid an unprecedented crisis.
