Lula campaign uses Bad Bunny song to promote sovereignty
The campaign of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has released a new electoral advertisement featuring a Portuguese adaptation of the song ‘Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii’ by Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny. The artist has authorized the use of the track, which originally addresses themes of colonialism and displacement.
The advertisement, which includes narration by actor Wagner Moura, focuses on the theme of national sovereignty and the protection of Brazil’s natural resources. The lyrics have been modified to mention Brazilian rivers, beaches, and the importance of controlling strategic minerals like rare earth elements.
The campaign uses the imagery to argue that Brazil’s territory and resources should remain under national control rather than being subject to foreign interference. This messaging aligns with Lula’s recent statements at the UN General Assembly regarding the need for Brazil to maintain autonomy and ensure that resource extraction benefits the country through technology transfer.
