Lula da Silva asserts Brazilian sovereignty at UN General Assembly
During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emphasized national sovereignty, stating that “Brazil does not fit in anyone’s backyard.” He criticized the United Nations for its perceived inability to prevent armed conflicts and expressed indignation regarding the current state of global security. Lula addressed the humanitarian situation in Gaza, describing the actions of the Netanyahu government as “genocide,” while also condemning the terrorist acts committed by Hamas against Israeli civilians.
Following these remarks, Aloizio Mercadante, president of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), echoed the sentiment of autonomy. Speaking at the J. Safra Investment Conference in São Paulo, Mercadante stated that Brazil must defend its interests on the international stage with pride and independence. He highlighted the need for the country to maintain a clear position amidst global economic shifts, such as trade disputes and the race for strategic resources for energy transition.
