Lula denounces homeschooling and civico‑military schools at SBPC
On 28 February, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva addressed the 78th annual meeting of the Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC) in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. He criticised the proposals of homeschooling and civico‑military schools, describing them as erroneous solutions for Brazil’s education system and calling the defence of homeschooling “the supremacy of ignorance.”
Lula also praised the interim governor of Rio de Janeiro, Justice Ricardo Couto, calling his provisional administration a “miracle of politics.” He reiterated the federal government's commitment to public‑education investment, university expansion and scientific research, and urged the scientific community to develop strategies for Brazil’s role in global technological competition, referencing the United States and China.
