Brazil 2026 elections: Candidates launch campaigns and register assets
As the 2026 presidential election cycle begins, several candidates have officially registered with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and outlined their initial campaign strategies. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is set to launch his reelection campaign on August 16 at Vila Euclides in São Bernardo do Campo, a location significant to his union leadership roots. His campaign strategy includes a heavy focus on regional support in the Northeast and the Southeast, as well as utilizing podcasts to engage Generation Z.
Lula has also dedicated time to recording campaign materials in Brasília, supporting over 30 candidates for governorships and the Senate across 18 states. Regarding debates, the PT leadership indicated that Lula's participation will depend on the compatibility of the schedule with his official presidential duties.
Other candidates have also made their moves. Writer Augusto Cury registered his candidacy, declaring assets of R$ 242 million. Romeu Zema declared assets totaling 178 million reais. Flávio Bolsonaro is preparing his campaign with a focus on energy policies, including unconventional gas exploration.
