Brazil 2026 elections: Presidential campaign officially begins FAST-MOVING

The 2026 Brazilian general elections officially entered the campaign phase on August 16, with candidates permitted to conduct street activities, including rallies and carreatas, until October 3. The first round of voting is scheduled for October 4, 2026, with a potential second round on October 25 for presidential and gubernatorial races.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has launched his campaign for a fourth term, holding a major rally in São Bernardo do Campo. His platform emphasizes national sovereignty, social issues, and public security. His primary opponent is Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who has also begun campaigning, notably in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

There are 13 registered candidates for the presidency. The political landscape shows significant trends, including at least 30 candidates using the 'Bolsonaro' name on ballots. Additionally, the Brazilian Army reported a more than 53% decrease in military members running for office compared to 2022, a trend attributed to efforts to depoliticize the Armed Forces.
