Flávio Bolsonaro and Lula to face second-round runoff in Brazil

Flávio Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will face each other in a second-round presidential runoff in Brazil after the first round of elections concluded without a majority winner. Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, secured approximately 47% of the vote, while the incumbent President Lula received roughly 45%.

The election results highlighted deep political polarization within the country. Bolsonaro's performance exceeded many polling projections, particularly in key states like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. Additionally, members of the Bolsonaro family saw success in legislative races, with Michelle Bolsonaro elected as a senator for the Federal District and Carlos Bolsonaro elected as a senator for Santa Catarina.

The second round of voting is scheduled for October 25. The election process was reported by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) as having occurred peacefully across the country, despite high levels of voter abstention and a highly contested political landscape.
