Brazil and U.S. to resume trade negotiations following presidential call
Brazil and the United States have agreed to resume trade negotiations via a virtual meeting scheduled for Monday, the 31st. The meeting will involve Brazilian Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services Márcio Elias Rosa and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The move follows a phone call between Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump. During the conversation, Lula characterized the U.S. justifications for recent tariffs as unfounded, specifically addressing concerns regarding Brazil's Pix electronic payment system and alleged censorship of U.S. tech companies.
In July, the USTR imposed a 25% surcharge on several Brazilian products following investigations. The dialogue aims to address these tensions and re-establish communication between Washington and Brasília. Additionally, both leaders are expected to speak at the UN General Assembly on September 22.
