Lula proposes Ministry of Public Security and addresses family investigations

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has proposed the creation of a Ministry of Public Security, contingent upon the approval of the PEC da Segurança Pública. He stated that the current constitutional structure limits federal action by delegating most security responsibilities to states. The proposed ministry would work alongside state and municipal governments, supported by the Federal Police, Federal Highway Police, and Penal Police.

Lula emphasized that combating organized crime must target the financial assets and leadership of criminal factions, noting that high-level leaders often live in luxury accommodations while the violence is felt in peripheries. He advocated for a policing model that punishes criminals without unnecessary loss of life.

Addressing investigations involving his son, Fábio Luis Lula da Silva, regarding suspected influence peddling and corruption, the President stated that if his son is innocent, he must prove it. Lula maintained that he does not interfere with investigations and that anyone found guilty will be punished. Additionally, the President announced plans to end the tax on small international purchases (up to $50) in an upcoming announcement.
