Lula pursues political alliances and ‘economy of affection’ strategy

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is utilizing a strategy described as the ‘economy of affection’ to strengthen his political position ahead of the 2026 elections. This concept, formulated by historian Alberto Aggio, involves building a relationship of reciprocity with popular sectors through symbolic recognition and policies that provide tangible daily benefits, such as renegotiating credit card debts and measures to improve income and quality of life.

To maintain executive power, Lula is also pursuing pragmatic alliances with the ‘Centrão’ in Congress. This is evidenced by his rapprochement with Senate President Davi Alcolumbre and House President Hugo Motta. This alignment forms a ‘troika’ aimed at preserving power across both the Executive and Legislative branches, balancing emotional connections with his base against the necessity of negotiating with center and right-wing parties.
