Lula coordinates with Congress leaders on key legislative agenda

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has reached an agreement with the presidents of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, and the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta, to define a concentrated legislative agenda for late August and early September. Key priorities include the constitutional amendment (PEC) to end the 6x1 work schedule, public security measures, the elimination of import taxes on small international purchases (the ‘blusinhas’ tax), and legislation regarding critical minerals and data center construction.

To expedite these matters, the installation of the joint commission for the import tax provisional measure (MP 1357/26) has been moved forward. The 6x1 work schedule proposal, which aims to reduce the weekly workload from 44 to 40 hours, is seeing accelerated movement in the Senate, with Senator Omar Aziz presenting a favorable report. However, studies suggest that ending the 6x1 scale could increase private school tuition by up to 23% due to increased labor costs.

Politically, Lula has signaled support for the reelection of Motta and Alcolumbre to lead the respective houses in 2027, a move seen as an effort to maintain institutional stability and legislative harmony. Meanwhile, internal pressures exist regarding electoral recordings in Piauí, as the government seeks to balance support for local candidates without alienating key political allies like Ciro Nogueira.
