Lula sparks controversy with remarks on Catholic Church celibacy

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has sparked controversy following remarks regarding the Catholic Church's structure. During a meeting with Protestant leaders, Lula suggested that the Catholic Church faces challenges because it maintains clerical celibacy and does not permit women to hold positions as bishops or priests. He noted that evangelical churches see more growth in Brazil partly because women are treated with more equality in leadership roles.

The comments drew immediate criticism from religious and political figures. Dom Devair Araújo da Fonseca, Bishop of the Diocese of Piracicaba, condemned the remarks as an attempt at external interference in the Church's internal decisions, stating, “In the Church of Christ, the devil does not put his paw.”

Additionally, the Catholic Parliamentary Front in the Chamber of Deputies issued a formal note repudiating the President's statements. Led by Deputy Luiz Gastão, the group defended the legitimacy of clerical celibacy and called for respect regarding the autonomy of faith communities to define their own convictions and traditions.
