Lumajang sees rising tourism amid environmental concerns at Ranu Pani Lake

Lumajang is seeing an increase in international tourism, driven by natural attractions such as the Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, coastal areas, and routes leading toward Mount Bromo. Immigration officials note that most foreign visitors arrive for tourism, which provides economic benefits to local sectors including transportation, lodging, and culinary services.

However, environmental challenges are emerging within the region's protected areas. Ranu Pani Lake, located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, is experiencing significant sedimentation and shrinking water levels. Reports indicate the lake's area has decreased to approximately 4.8 hectares following previous normalization efforts. Officials from the national park noted that while dredging was performed in 2025, siltation has recurred, leading to concerns regarding the lake's depth and total surface area.
