Lumbee Tribe gains federal recognition as Georgian officials dispute EU assessment
The Lumbee Tribe in North Carolina has achieved federal recognition after decades of activism. While this status grants access to Indian Health Service (IHS) funding, it presents immediate public health challenges. Robeson County, where most Lumbee members reside, is identified as one of the most inequitable counties in the United States regarding health outcomes. Tribal leaders must now navigate complex federal procurement processes to address long-standing structural inequities, including limited primary care access and healthcare workforce shortages.
In Georgia, parliamentary majority members Mariam Lashkhia and Irakli Kirtskhelia have criticized European Commissioner Marta Kos. The officials responded to Kos’s assessment that Georgia is only a candidate country on paper, trailing behind Ukraine and Moldova. Lashkhia argued that Kos’s statements are not supported by facts, claiming that according to European Commission-affiliated indices, Georgia leads its associated and candidate countries in transparency and economic rankings.
