Village of Lytton elects new mayor via drawing of lots FAST-MOVING

Village of Lytton municipal election Jennifer Thoss Denise O’Connor judicial recount

Jennifer Thoss has been confirmed as the new mayor of the Village of Lytton following a tie in the municipal election. Both Thoss and incumbent mayor Denise O’Connor received 45 votes in the election held on October 17.

A judicial recount in Kamloops confirmed the tie, triggering the village’s election procedure bylaw and the Local Government Act. To resolve the deadlock, the names of the two candidates were placed in a container and a winner was determined by drawing lots on Tuesday, October 27.

Chief election officer Shannon Story noted that while ties are statistically rare, they are more possible in smaller municipalities with fewer voters. Thoss previously served as a councillor, while O’Connor had been elected mayor in 2022.
