Lumdatalbahn reactivation sought by Hessen mobility advocates

Advocacy groups and regional stakeholders are calling for the reactivation of rail lines in Hessen, specifically focusing on the Lumdatalbahn, which connects the Lumdatal region to the city of Gießen. The alliance for socially responsible mobility met with Hessian Transport Minister Kaweh Mansoori to request increased financial support and the prioritization of rail expansion to ensure regional connectivity.

Efforts to revive the Lumdatalbahn include exploring the resumption of freight traffic to support local industry, such as RHI Magnesita. While 50 million euros have been allocated from special funds for the reactivation of the Lumdatal, Horloff, and Aartal lines, advocates argue that more funding is required to ensure barrier-free expansion and to secure ongoing operational costs.

Proponents emphasize that reactivating these lines would benefit commuters and industrial businesses in rural areas, reduce heavy traffic through local towns, and support climate protection goals. The Lumdatalbahn, which saw its last passenger train in 1981, shows a positive cost-benefit ratio for potential reactivation.
