Lumen Technologies partners with Ohio State and Emerald AI
Lumen Technologies has announced several initiatives to address the energy demands of artificial intelligence and the security requirements of the quantum era. Through a collaboration with Emerald AI, Lumen is developing a system to route AI workloads to different locations based on power availability, cost, and latency. This approach aims to mitigate the power capacity constraints currently facing AI expansion.
Additionally, Lumen is investing in research with The Ohio State University to investigate how its fiber infrastructure can support quantum connectivity over long distances. To defend against future quantum-based security threats, the company is also introducing quantum-resistant capabilities via a Fortinet-based Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution. These security features are expected to be introduced in November 2026, with general availability planned for January 2027.
