Luminor expert advises on managing inherited property and mortgages

Following the death of a relative, heirs must navigate complex financial decisions regarding inherited property and associated debts. Experts advise that clarity in these matters can prevent future stress.

According to Laura Žukovė, head of mortgage financing at Luminor bank, it is crucial to determine the full composition of the inherited estate, including any outstanding financial obligations. A key legal point is that an heir can choose to renounce an inheritance entirely, which includes both the assets and the debts. However, if the inheritance is accepted, the heir assumes the entirety of it; one cannot inherit a property while rejecting the accompanying mortgage or other debts.

It is a common misconception that mortgage payments automatically stop upon the death of the borrower. In reality, credit agreements remain in effect. Experts recommend contacting the bank as soon as possible to assess the situation, check for life insurance coverage, and discuss potential solutions while the inheritance process is underway.
