Lunar eclipse to be visible across the Americas in August 2026

A deep partial lunar eclipse, often referred to as a ‘blood moon’ due to its reddish hue, will occur between the night of August 27 and the early morning of August 28, 2026. The phenomenon is expected to be visible across the Americas, Europe, and parts of Africa and Western Asia.

In Mexico, the eclipse will be visible throughout all 32 states. In Mexico City, the penumbral phase begins at 19:23 on August 27, with the maximum point occurring at 22:12. In Ecuador, the Quito Astronomical Observatory reports the partial phase will start at 21:33, reaching its maximum at 23:12 when approximately 93% of the lunar disk enters Earth's shadow.

In Colombia, the event is scheduled to begin at 20:24 on August 27, reaching its peak at 23:13. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye and do not require special protective equipment. The reddish color is caused by Earth's atmosphere filtering sunlight and projecting red wavelengths onto the Moon's surface.
