Lunar soil research reveals ancient star history and mining potential

Researchers have identified new ways to utilize lunar regolith for both scientific history and resource extraction. A study led by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa suggests that moon dust may serve as a cosmic archive, potentially preserving a record of supernova explosions dating back 80 million to 100 million years.

Because the moon lacks a thick atmosphere, radioactive material from ancient stars becomes mixed into the soil through a process called “impact gardening.” Scientists have developed a mathematical model to reconstruct this scrambled history by accounting for meteorite impacts, soil compaction, and radioactive decay.

In a separate development, the Seattle-based startup Interlune has successfully simulated 15,000 years of solar radiation exposure in just four hours. By bombarding mineral grains with helium plasma in a vacuum chamber, the company recreated the microscopic defects in ilmenite that allow lunar soil to trap volatile gases. This breakthrough provides a method to validate technology for future off-world mining and lunar resource processing.
