Lund University researchers test bus seatbelt reminders in Sweden

A collaborative research project involving Lund University, Hallandstrafiken, Nobina, and the Swedish Bus Industry Council is testing seatbelt reminder systems to increase safety on public buses.

The trial is being conducted on Hallandstrafiken's line 401, which operates between Halmstad and Hyltebruk. The technical system, supplied by Holmbergs Safety Systems AB, functions similarly to car reminders by alerting passengers to use their seatbelts when they board the vehicle.

Researchers will conduct measurements at three distinct stages: before the system installation, immediately after installation, and following a targeted information campaign for passengers. The study aims to evaluate passenger awareness, acceptance of the technology, and the overall impact on seatbelt usage and traffic safety. The findings will serve as a basis for determining if such solutions can be implemented on a larger scale.
