Lung Association reports up to 240,000 undiagnosed COPD cases in Denmark

The Lung Association (Lungeforeningen) estimates that up to 240,000 people in Denmark are living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) without a diagnosis. While official records show 160,000 diagnosed cases, statistical calculations suggest a significant number of undiagnosed individuals across the country.

Regional estimates for undiagnosed cases include 61,050 in the Capital Region, 57,400 in Southern Denmark, 52,750 in Central Jutland, 41,050 in Zealand, and 28,500 in North Jutland. COPD remains the leading cause of single-disease mortality in Denmark, claiming an average of 10 lives per day.

Ann Leistiko, director of the Lung Association, emphasizes that early detection is critical to preventing severe lung damage and improving life expectancy. To encourage testing, the association is hosting Lung Day on September 24, offering free lung function checks.
