Lung cancer care advances through new screening methods and hospital networks
New developments in lung cancer management are emerging through both diagnostic research and regional healthcare coordination in Italy.
The CAREFULNESS study, conducted by the University of Turin and presented at the World Conference on Lung Cancer in Seoul, is investigating the integration of liquid biopsies with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT). By combining blood-based biomarker analysis with radiological imaging, researchers aim to improve the precision of risk assessment for high-risk smokers and better distinguish between suspicious lesions and non-cancerous nodules.
In Palermo, a new collaborative initiative known as the “Palermo Metropolitan Consensus” has been established to address fragmented care for metastatic lung carcinoma. This network connects four major healthcare facilities: A.O.U. Policlinico “Paolo Giaccone”, ARNAS Ospedali Civico Di Cristina Benfratelli, Casa di Cura La Maddalena, and A.O.O. Ospedali Riuniti Villa Sofia Cervello. The goal is to create a multidisciplinary clinical pathway that ensures rapid diagnosis and precise molecular profiling, which is essential for utilizing modern targeted therapies and immunotherapy.
