Lung cancer prevention study identifies barriers for Appalachian Kentucky women

Researchers have identified specific barriers and facilitators to lung cancer prevention among women in Appalachian Kentucky, a region experiencing the highest lung cancer rates in the United States. Using participatory mixed methods and concept mapping with 71 adult women, the study categorized 70 different factors into eight thematic clusters, including healthcare, community-level, and tobacco-related issues.

Findings suggest that effective prevention requires multilevel interventions. Key recommendations include educational campaigns targeting youth and mothers, policy changes such as smoke-free laws and vaping regulations, and improved access to lung cancer screening services.
