Lung cancer research identifies pollution-linked blood markers and multi-target therapies
Researchers have identified molecular changes in the blood that can signal the future development of lung cancer following long-term exposure to air pollution. A study published in ‘Nature Communications’ by scientists from Emory University analyzed blood samples from over 1,350 individuals participating in the ACS Cancer Prevention Study. The findings revealed disruptions in inflammatory processes, oxidative stress, toxin removal, and energy metabolism that appeared several years before a lung cancer diagnosis.
Dr. Ying Wang, a co-author of the study, noted that while air pollution is a documented carcinogen, the specific biological mechanisms leading to disease are not fully understood. These identified biological changes may eventually assist in developing blood tests for early detection.
In a separate research effort, Dr. Katarzyna Malarz from the University of Silesia is leading a project to combat non-small cell lung cancer through multi-target therapies. This research aims to address the genetic heterogeneity of tumors, where a single cancer can contain multiple mutations. By attacking several molecular mechanisms simultaneously, the goal is to prevent cancer cells from developing resistance to treatments that target only a single molecular goal.
