Luoyang hosts forum on archaeological heritage preservation

The seventh International Ancient Capitals Forum and 2026 Global Mayors Dialogue recently took place in Luoyang, Henan province. The events focused on the protection of archaeological sites and the creative utilization of cultural heritage.

Luoyang has implemented strategies to balance urban growth with historical preservation, such as developing new urban areas away from the old town and converting protected relics into archaeological parks. A primary focus remains the Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Longmen Grottoes Research Institute is currently managing conservation efforts, including digital preservation and technical research to address hazards like water seepage and rock instability.

Additionally, the Sui-Tang Luoyang City site, which served as a major capital for various dynasties for over 530 years, serves as a key example of ancient Chinese urban planning and architectural craftsmanship undergoing revitalization.
